Summer Reading

Statement of Mission: The purpose of our summer reading program is two-fold. First, to provide our students with an opportunity to maintain and sharpen their reading and thinking skills over the summer months through exposure to quality books and texts. Second, to provide a smooth transition to the Fall term by integrating summer reading into first term assignments.

Assessment and Expectations: Students will read the assigned books and complete the designated assignment. These assignments will count as a test grade to be applied to the first quarter grade. All students must read the assigned books and complete the corresponding assignments. The first quarter grade will remain "incomplete" until all work is completed. Assignments submitted late will receive a "failing" grade. Consequently, students will be expected to read their assigned texts carefully and to prepare their assignments in a conscientious and timely manner during the summer months.

Academic Honesty: Consistent with our mission of academic and personal excellence, students are expected to submit their own work in response to assignments. All forms of academic dishonesty, including plagiarism, interfere with students' ability to develop and refine their reading, thinking and communication skills. Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, direct copying of another person's work without using quotation marks and without citing the author; using the ideas but not the exact words of another (paraphrasing) without providing the citation; and submitting work of another person as if it is one's own. It is the sincere belief of the faculty and staff of Mount Saint Joseph Academy that all students can choose to practice the skills of academic honesty.
